The artwork painted by Leonel Garcia together with Federico Merodo has become a magnet and meeting place for football fans and members of the local community in Berazategui as World Cup fever sweeps the country.

Surrounding the realistic portrait of Messi are the signatures and messages created by around 1,100 fans of the footballing icon who are hoping Argentina can retain the World Cup.

Leonel Garcia revealed that his dream was not only to paint a mural of Messi but capture the Argentina captain’s attention. Thanks to his striking mural that went viral on social media, Messi himself recorded a video clip thanking the artist and all the Argentine supporters who are backing the national team ahead of their World Cup campaign that gets underway at Kansas City Stadium tonight.

The mural is located in Beraategui city centre on Avenida Mitre around the corner from Avenida 14.
