Martin Fierro muralismo festival in San Martin, Buenos Aires

Martin Fierro International Muralismo Meeting a couple of weeks ago saw 35 artists paint different murals in San Martín, Buenos Aires. Photos by Buenos Aires Street Art.

The event entitled Encuentro Internacional de Muralismo commemorated 190 years since the birth of José Hernández who wrote the famous poem Martin Fierro relating to the life of a gaucho.

Martin Fierro was written in 1872 and is regarded as the most important piece of literature about the hardships and challenges faced by a working gaucho in Argentina. And different muralists chose to paint artworks related to gaucho culture and traditions.

Several of the artists have chosen to paint typical scenes from Martin Fierro and the campo featuring gauchos on horses or around a camp fire as well as nature, birds, animals and indigenous symbols.

The event took place in November and was organised by San Martin local government as part of their project called San Martin Pinta Bien to beautify the district with murals and street art. This meeting brought together several artists who have influences from traditional muralism.

Mate or gaucho tea that is a traditional drink in Argentina is also depicted in several murals. Bernie Chempio has painted a mural featuring a man drinking mate and the phrase: “A mate like an infusion of friendship.”

The murals are located on the corner of Av. 25 de Mayo y General Paz, San Martín.
