In subte station Hospitales on Linea H in Parque Patricios, Lean Frizzera and Martin Ron have painted stunning new murals dedicated to famous figures and characters from Argentine tango.

The tympana above the entrances to the tunnels at either end of the station feature portraits of tango singers Tita Merello and Angel Villoldo to whom the station is dedicated and portaits of muses of Puente Alsina. The artworks were designed by Ma Cla Management de Arte + Cultura de Latino America (MA + CLA) and Naranja Contemporaneo.

The French muses are a reference to a tango by Villoldo entitled ‘El Choclo’.
Not amusing – row between the national and city governments
Ironically despite construction work on the metro station being completed and the artworks finished, the date when the new subte stations will actually open is still uncertain due to the continuing row between the national and city governments over who pays for and manages the underground service.
No light at the end of the tunnel
The crisis led to a 10 day tube strike earlier this month and the two governments are no nearer reaching an agreement. Concerns also remain over safety of the service and maintenance of the rolling stock. And second hand train carriages bought from Spain and China that are needed to carry the extra passengers are still not yet ready for operation.
